What should I take when I visit Pearl Harbor?
So you’ve booked your tour or tickets and you’re ready to go to Pearl Harbor. Now you just have to decide what to take with you. Pearl Harbor is a memorial site, and is also still a working military base, so there are actually several rules and stipulations for things that you can and can’t take in with you.
Bags
You can take a day pack, a handbag, camera bag, diaper bag, and even luggage. You are NOT allowed to take these things into the Visitor Center. There is a storage facility at the entrance where you can leave your bags for a fee of $3 per bag. You may take in your wallet, camera, phone, and clear plastic water bottle. Strollers and wheelchairs are also allowed.
Cameras
Cameras are allowed, as are video cameras, but if your camera seems a little “extra large” you might be questioned by security on your intentions. Filming commercially is prohibited and, as mentioned above, camera bags are not permitted.
Clothes
Although there isn’t an official dress code, there is a such thing as inappropriate clothing. Remember, Pearl Harbor is a memorial site that suffered terrible heartache. Pay your respects by showing your own dignity. No swim suits, no profanity on your shirts, and no Daisy Dukes. A pair of cargo pants will help you carry all your belongings. We also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes and bringing a light jacket with you, just in case.
Food
Some tours include lunch, so you don’t have to worry. There are several places at Pearl Harbor where you can purchase a light meal. Baby food may be carried in the stroller bag.
Kids and Pets
If you’re wondering whether to pack the little ones, rest assured that you can. In fact, we encourage it. It’s an amazing way for them to step inside history and to see both the good and the bad. They’ll learn more in a few hours here than they would in a year at school. Just remember they are your responsibility, so keep an eye on them.
Although visitors practically never come to Hawaii with pets, they are a definite no-no at Pearl Harbor.
